Southwest Power Pool uses EnCompass for 20 Year Assessment Emission Reduction Goals
Southwest Power Pool, in conjunction with power sector consultants from 1898 & Co., part of Burns and McDonnell, determined EnCompass power planning software to be an integral component of their planning process.
SPP and 1898 & Co. originally conducted the study with legacy software, which could not achieve desired goals and resulted in significant issues related to battery optimization. The impact on emergency energy, dump energy, and renewable curtailments caused them to seek a more viable solution and select EnCompass.
EnCompass was used to optimize the thermal generation mix to balance energy needs and solve the planning reserve margin. Its capabilities were also applied to optimize low/no carbon resource additions to meet carbon emission targets, to determine additional retirements, and reverse engineer carbon caps as carbon tax for legacy software implementation.
Because EnCompass was utilized for the capacity expansion side of the study and to calculate the carbon tax effectively, SPP ascertained the software as a valuable part of their planning, which led them to bring EnCompass in-house for use in other studies. Their staff presented these results to both SPP work groups, as well as at the recent EnCompass User Group meeting in Arkansas.
